7. My Favorite Things- Skincare

Has it seriously been 7 months since I posted! Holy moly! I guess that's what happens when you get a job and become a grown up! Anyway, I owe my return to a friend of mine who recently asked me about some skincare/makeup advice. So, I'll break it up into 2 posts. This one will be about the skincare products I can't live without. What are some of your favorite skin care lines?

 It's all about the canvas.

Seriously. You're makeup wont go on evenly/beautifully if your face isn't properly smooth and primed.

Exfoliate!

I am obsessed with exfoliating. Do it once a week and your skin will feel as smooth as a baby's behind. You will thank me for this tip :)

1. Face Cleanser-
Clinique Mild Facial Soap- $12 at department stores

This is not your ordinary bar of facial soap. It leaves you feeling silky smooth and never dry. I use it religiously.

2. Face Exfoliator-
St. Ives Elements Olive Scrub, $8 at drugstores
This is a gentle exfoliating cleanser. As I said before, you should make sure to exfoliate at least once a week. This is a great moisturizing cleanser that leaves skin smooth and refreshed by using olive oil and natural exfoliants. It smells great too!

Another Option for maximum exfoliating is (my-can't-live-without)

Olay Regenerist Microdermabrasion and Peel System

$28 at drugstores
This system is ah-mazing. I seriously feel as if I've just left from getting a professional facial after I use it. This 2-step skincare treatment actively works together to give you a microderm  exfoliating benefits as well as a mini peel treatment. The results- glowing skin. Even better- over time it diminishes the looks of fine lines and wrinkles and improves skin tone.

What more could you ask for?!

3. Facial Moisturizer-
Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel, $24.50 at Department Stores
That's a mouthful.. but despite its long name, it is good to the last drop. This gel formula is specific for skin types 3-4= oily skin (which I have). The regular DDM lotion is just as wonderful. It softens skin and leaves you feeling perfectly balanced. No wonder it wins award after award.

4. Lip Exfoliator-
C.O. Bigelow Mentha Lip Buffer, $7.50 at Bath and Body Works
Here we go again with exfoliating! Especially during winter, lips get dry, cracked, flaky and just gross. Exfoliate them with this mint infused sugar scrub made just for your lips! It leaves them with a renewed softness and glow.

5. Lip Moisturizer-
Rosebud Salve, $6, Sephora
I have been using this lip salve long before it became a cult following years ago. It is probably the most amazing thing EVER. Not only does it sooth dry lips, heals irritations and sooth burns, but its also for skin dryness and some have even used it for diaper rash! As cheap as this is, everyone needs to throw some in your purse. Now.

6. Body Cleanser-
Voluspa Shea Butter Soap in Laguna, $10, wherever you can find it
I own a plethora of body washes, soaps, etc. just as the next person but I am truly ecstatic when I find a worthy one. Recently I purchased this Voluspa (the company that makes those great candles) Shea Butter Soap in Laguna. It smells fantastic. It also leaves my skin as smooth as silk. Love it.

7. Body Exfoliator-
Tree Hut Shea Sugar Body Scrub, $7 at Ulta
More exfoliating! This Shea sugar body scrub smells so yummy its literally a treat in the shower. Formulated with Organic Shea butter, its whole sugar grains provide a deep but gentle exfoliation.

8. Body Moisturizer-
Suave Cocoa Butter with Shea, $3 at drugstores
I love cocoa butter. It seriously smells good enough to eat! Lather it on after you take a shower, before bed, etc. to get silky, yummy smelling skin.

9. Make-up Remover-
Yes to Cucumbers Facial Towelettes, $6 at Ulta
These award winning facial cleansing cloths are wonderful. They remove dirt, oil, makeup and leave your skin feeling as if it's been washed in light cucumber water in one swipe. If you're on the go as much as I am these are a must have.

10. Acne/All purpose Oil-
Tea Tree Oil, Drug or Health Food stores, $8-10
Tea tree oil is great for bug bites and wounds as well as acne. Put a tiny drop on the affected area a couple of times a day and in no time your boo-boo will be gone. I love tea tree oil in bath water for a relaxing touch.

6. What I'm Wearing

So, last week (before this interruption of dreary, cold, rainy weather that lasted forever) it was absolutely gorgeous outside and felt amazing. I went shopping and running errands in the most comfortable green jersey-knit dress by Jack by BBDakota and I decided to do my hair a little different. I did the traditional “Lauren Conrad” braid on the side of my hair line, stopping just above my ear, securing with a bobby pin. I then pulled the rest of my hair back into a messy, knotted bun. I got lots of compliments and it was super easy! What are some of your favorite hairstyle for summer?

5. Hello Hiatus!

Sorry for the long break in posting! So many things going on.. but let me just tell you moving is the biggest headache ever. Even after a few weeks in my new place, I still can’t seem to find things! On another note, make sure you have lots of strong, able help! My conclusion= Moving is for the birds!
So, besides moving, getting sick and several other issues, I am now doing pretty well! Trying to get back on track and back to sharing with you! I have begun helping at a great little Boutique in town and will do my internship there to complete my credits for my degree so my blog will be featuring some of that awesome merchandise very soon! : )
Even with all the chaos going on, I still tried to keep a positive outlook on things! I found this precious little picture and it made me realize that smiling really is the best cosmetic! :)

4. All You Need Is Love...

So, Valentine's Day is right around the corner.. and I for one cannot believe that it is already here. I personally think all of the hoop-la is a bit overrated, but I do love an excuse to get a few pretty things for a special date night. This is a date night outfit I would wear, if I were going out to a nice restaurant. <The BF and I have decided to stay at home with a bottle of wine instead :) >

All of these items are affordable except the booties and clutch.

Another blouse option at an even lower price point is this pretty Flutter Sequin Rosette Blouse by Rue 21.

 It is a mere $19!

Whatever your plans are for V-day, I hope it includes, giving someone a hug..

Or maybe a kiss..

Because we all need a little love.

Happy Heart Day!!!

3. What I'm Wearing - Layered Polish

Ok, so typically this entry would be more geared towards fashion or what I'm actually wearing or different trends, etc. This is more of a beauty trend and I just wanted to share my newest experiment with you!

So, as much as I am so OVER the cold, ice, rain, wind mess that is better known as Winter, I still love a good dark nail polish when it is chilly out. Personally I think dark nails seem a bit overdone in summer time. Getting rather bored with my usual dark palette: a deep burgundy, a charcoal and an almost black hunter green, I decided to try something new. < BTW- I do my own manicures. I save the money that I would be spending on them for more fun things= clothes :) > So, last week while rummaging through my polishes I pulled out a bright, metallic blue and a glossy black. I decided to try a layer of the blue polish first then coat it with a layer of the black.

To my surprise, it turned out to be a beautiful partnership! I still have a dark nail, but it has a surprising blue metallic shimmer underneath! LOVE IT!

I have also been eying the new OPI Simply Smashing Collection that contains the crackle polish, Black Shatter. I think this would look ah-mazing for the right occasion. What do you think? Would you wear this gold or silver based?

2. And the Winner Is…

Okay, so I promised that I would only blog once a week, but I am too excited to hold out on this list any longer. The Golden Globes is one of the most exciting times to dish on who’s wearing what and if they rocked the red carpet or fell flat on their face.  You guessed it: Best and Worst Dressed Contenders.  There were many, many I left out due to the fact they were boring, played it safe, etc. This list is all about the extremes. So, here it is. The top 3 trends I noticed repeatedly were glitter (sequins), asymmetrical necklines (one-shoulder) and pastel pinks and nudes. Feel free to comment your own opinions! (Photos Courtesy of elle.com and usmagazine.com)

BEST DRESSED

Amy Adams looks fabulous in this asymmetrical navy Marchesa gown. It complements her hair and skin tone perfectly and the ruffle detail is very flattering to her shape. Great choice.

Even though this kind of has a Little Mermaid flare to it, Mila Kunis looks great in this emerald one shoulder gown by Vera Wang. The color is a great pop of excitement, as well as the excellent fabric draping- which accentuates her waistline. Love it.

I’m totally obsessed with Carrie Underwood. I don’t think she has ever worn anything I didn’t like (knocking on wood…). This is no exception. She looks heavenly in this sequined Badgley Mischka Couture gown. She always seems to pull together looks that are timeless and perfect. Definitely my 2nd Runner Up.

Who says you can’t be fashionable after a certain age? So not the case here. Helen Mirren looks very polished and elegant in this golden Badgley Mischka Couture gown. The peek-through sleeve line makes the gown very age appropriate and adds an element of surprise. It is incredibly beautiful on her.

OMG. Shaun Robinson looks amazing. While I’m not a huge fan of the full sleeve asymmetrical gown, this Oday Shakar dress makes me question “why not?” You know this dress weighed about 75 lbs. and her face seems as if it’s light as a feather. The side chignon her hair is in is a perfect balance for the slanted neckline and her look is brilliantly perfect.

This Giorgio Amani Privé dress is definitely a risk taker and Anne Hathaway pulls it off! The puffed sleeve and large nude sequin detail give a somewhat futuristic effect while surprisingly not being boring. She looks beautifully glowing. Props to ya girl.

Okay, so besides that fact that she kind of looks like a Scarlett O’Hara Barbie Doll, Catherine Zeta-Jones looks astonishing in this Monique Lhuillier gown.  The sweetheart neckline is a perfect touch to simplify the voluminous skirt and the emerald printed fabric is genius. So glamorous.

Sofia Vergara is ridiculously beautiful. And funny. And perfect. And she dresses super amazing. So. not. fair. I absolutely love this pretty poppy red color on her. The waist cinching trumpeted gown is very flattering and her hair looks fabulous(as always). This dress couldn’t fit her better.

This Badgley Mischka Couture grey-blue number looks super fabulous on Jane Krakowski. The color is a gorgeous compliment to her hair and skin tone and the asymmetrical neck adds feminine flare. The empire waist shows off her growing baby bump without making her look frumpy or big. She is radiantly glowing, as every prego woman should be. I also love how the slit is compromised with a lace inset- genius touch of femininity.

While not 100% sold on the ruffle tiers of this Pamella Roland dress.. it fits Maria Menounos like a glove. I am infatuated with the embellished v-neckline and the peachy pink color looks great on her. The dress is simple while still being sexy and appropriate. Super hott.

This nude Elie Saab dress has a tad too much tulle but overall, it looks great on Scarlett Johansson. I love seeing her in something more modest and charming as opposed to the “let it all hang out- super tight- can’t breate” outfits she has chosen before. She looks very polished and pulled together.

Love this Oliver Tolentino dress on Amber Riley. She looks stunning. The side swept hair appropriately balances out the asymmetrical shoulder and the belt breaks up the look of being overdone while cinching in her waist and showing her curves. The trumpeted skirt balances her out without making her seem to heavy on top. Fabulous.

Okay.. so I know Megan Fox is dumb as a box of rocks.. but she is still really, really pretty- especially in this light pink Armani Privé gown. I love how the top bodice is covered in strips of different color satin and the embellished detail and shoulder is just right without going overboard and being too girly. The overall look is effortless and sophisticated.

 And the Winner is...

Olivia Wilde In Marchesa

I am totally speechless. She. Looks. Amazing. I absolutely am in love with this Marchesa gown and it is the perfect fit for the occasion. While the tulle skirt is somewhat poufy it is not too full and is very glamorous. I love the bejeweled ombré effect and the fact that her hair is kept simple and jewelry minimal. Perfection.

(The only thing that bothered me was the Louboutin shoes, while fabulous, they simply don’t match. Good thing they were covered up.)

WORST DRESSED

Umm… is this a hippie convention? A summer picnic? A promo for Marc Jacob’s Daisy campaign? NO. It’s not. It’s the freaking Golden Globes! I’m sorry Michelle Williams, I do like you, and I love Valentino but sadly this has missed the mark. Way off.  I just don’t understand.

This Jenny Packham dress seems a little frumpy and long. But it probably wouldn’t be so horrible if were done in the right way. Sandra Bullock looks like she went to a rock concert the night before, woke up hungover, threw this on and left the house. Mistake. While I can appreciate that the girls been through a rough year, hiding behind oneself is never flattering. She could have rocked a beautiful gown and looked astonishing. I’m sad to say this doesn’t.

What. Is. This. I am so confused about this Nina Ricci dress I don’t even know where to start. It seems as if the underwear as outwear trend that hit the runways is now on the red carpet. Oh dear. I’m not sure if Halle Berry is trying to make a cat woman comeback or she seriously thought this was cute? Everything about it is just wrong.

Are we on little house on the prairie? It seems as if the only thing going for this Burberry Prorsum dress is the slit in it, which confuses people as why that is the only skin she is showing. Leighton Meester is much too young and pretty to be wearing something so dated and frumpy. I guess she should hire her Gossip Girl stylist as her personal one. Better luck next time.

This Marc Jacobs dress is somewhat cute.. If you were going on a yacht in the Caribbean. Not the Golden Globes! I especially hate how they dolled Heidi up to look like Malibu Barbie. The parted wavy hair? The bright coral lipstick? The 2,719 bangles on both arms? No, no and no!  C’mon Heidi. We expect more from you.

If anyone owns anything remotely similar to this, go to your closet and throw it away. Immediately. While I can appreciate a bigger girl trying to be modest and cover her arms, this Marc Bouwer dress just makes Gabourey Sidibe look even larger. The kimono shape, the print, the.. well.. it’s just awful. All of it. Should’ve taken notes from Amber Riley (in the Best Dressed list!).

Bubblegum anyone? As if her personality wasn’t bubbly enough, Lea Michele looks super bright while drowning in this pink Oscar de la Renta gown. The overall shape is fitting to her, until about ¼ of the way down. The skirt is much too full for her tiny frame and there is just SO MUCH FABRIC. Not so gleeful.

I am not exactly sure why there is a huge red rose of the middle of Natalie Portman’s chest as a focal point? Are they seriously trying that hard to distract you from her baby bump? Why? This Viktor & Rolf dress makes her look silly and childish.

It’s simply overwhelming, tacky and overdone.

OMG. Is this Dynasty? I am seriously having an 80’s flashback here. The hot pink, the one shoulder leg o’mutton sleeve, the tapered in skirt.. Really?! This Lanvin frock looks like an entrapment on Julianne Moore. Horrible.

 And the Winner is...
Helena Bonham Carter In Vivienne Westwood

Umm.. wth Helena? I mean I know you are really “out there” (aka crazy) but this look is bordering Lady Gaga extreme. And no one likes an attention stealer. You’re hair is a frizzy mullet, the 3 different pieces of the Vivienne Westwood dress sewn together is not appealing and your mismatched shoes arn’t cute. I have to say you are a hot mess and the worst dressed.
